THE ACCIDENTAL ARTIST | Carol Measom

A native Houstonian, Carol currently divides her time between Houston and Coeur d'Alene, Idaho. Travel and life in various environments has been the inspiration of her art.

Carol has always been creative and refined those skills at the Art Institute of Houston. She managed the marketing and creative design of her husband's technology company until their retirement in 2012. Soon after, a chance meeting at her home in Mexico led Carol to a new friendship and a weekly painting group of artists that inspired her to start painting.

Two years later a new friendship with an artist in Houston helped propel Carol's art and change her whole trajectory. She went from selling paintings to friends to being an international, published artist with exhibitions. Carol's art is currently featured in monthly public shows in both Houston and Coeur d’Alene. Her work can be found in galleries and private collections across the US, Mexico, France, Nordstrom Houston Galleria and Houston's Intercontinental Airport in Terminal A.

ARTIST STATEMENT

I love all things fashion and this is likely why I love painting with vibrant colors so much. Though I don’t usually start with any particular reference or subject, travel and my surroundings certainly inspire me to paint. Art is an experimental process for me. I started painting by experimenting and it carries over into what I do today. When I started I had no training in fine art, so I had nothing to fear. I often jump into a new painting with that same fearless intention. This can lead me to feeling lost in a painting at times–having to eliminate some of what I have laid down. My graphic design background draws me to art with a lot of negative space, and I struggle to accomplish that simplicity in my work. It’s that struggle and continuous desire to accomplish perfection that draws me to the canvas over and over again.
